Objective 3: Community Partnerships, Awards and Special Recognition
3.1. School Active in Community :
Maryland Day - For the past four years, the CYC has used Maryland Day ( a UMD campus wide community day) to showcase the many green activities the school does and uses it as a celebration for the Maryland Green School and Eco School award. The CYC music teacher leads a sing- along with environmental Earth loving songs incorporated in it. Displays on the front bulletin board and Great Room showcase are made for families to see. The past two years Kristen Bowman as lead an environmental themed yoga where children create poses to show how different plants grow.
Denton Green Fest - For the past four years the CYC has participated in the UMD's Denton Dorm Quad Green Fest. 2016 the children helped make a display on Composting, 2017 Recycled art was the theme, 2018 children helped make a display about Trash Free Tuesdays, 2019 Be Active Outside. The CYC and University community are invited to come.
Collecting Food - In the spring of 2018 the during a Grocery Store project, the Yellow Room preschoolers learned about food security and collected food for a food bank. They made posters to announce the project, and collected and sorted the food.
Little Free Library - Just outside of the CYC are two Little Free libraries, one for children and one for adults. Families and campus visitors and residents check the libraries frequently, and add donations. The libraries were built by the direction of Greg Thompson from dining services. A PTP representative maintains it as a steward. This year's steward is parent Jackie Madoo.

Global Hand Washing Day - For the past six years the Global Public Health Scholars from the UMD have presented a hand washing program to the children at the Center for Young Children.
Office of Sustainability - Summer Camp Energy Study
Steve Cohen - Landscape architect professor invites students to work on projects on the CYC playground.
Greg Thompson - Little Free Mr. Thompson built two Little Free Libraries for the CYC parking lot medium strip. CYC families maintain it and the children decorated it.
Renovation Solutions Construction Co. Donated cross cut wood slabs for the playground. Children move the slabs around and create bridges, balance beams, table tops, obstacle courses etc.
Parent Teacher Partnership (PTP) - The CYC version of the PTA, supports all of the sustainable efforts in the school. They have waste free meeting writing the agenda on a dry erase board instead of printing it out. They purchase Ranger Rick Jr. for all classrooms, and receive Green Committee updates at each meeting. They use washable dishes at their annual International picnic.
